INNOVATIONS IN THE USE OF THE PLASMA SURGICAL SCAPEL FOR GENERAL SURGERY, GASTROINTESTINAL TUMORS AND ENDOSCOPY

JEROME CANADY, M.D. FACS

Jerome Canady, M.D. FACS is a staff surgeon specializing in Surgical Oncology and General Surgery at the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, Largo, Maryland as well as UM Laurel Medical Center, Laurel, Maryland.

Dr. Canady is the founder of Jerome Canady Visceral Surgery Center. Visceral surgery center provides expert experience in the management of complex tumors of the gastrointestinal tract i.e. liver, bile duct, pancreas, intestine, sarcomas, colon with assisted pre-operative 3-D imaging and mapping via CT/MRI scan. Dr. Canady specializes in acute and complex gastrointestinal emergencies, HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy), cytoreduction of metastatic, recurrent complex tumors of the gastrointestinal tract i.e., liver, bile duct, pancreas, intestine, colon, ovaries, and colon.

Dr. Canady has over a 20 years surgical experience in general surgery and surgical oncology. He has authored or co-authored over 70 scientific publications and travelled as a Visiting Professor and lecturer in the U.S., China, Europe, Israel, Japan, South America, Russia and UAE. He has patented or patent pending for over 250 inventions. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery (2000) and recertified in 2008 and 2020 and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons FACS. He is also certified by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.

Dr. Canady is a Research Professor Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Co-Director Plasma Medicine Program GWU/USMI at George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He is also the Chief Science Officer at The Jerome Research Institute for Advanced Biological and Technological Sciences (JCRI-ABTS), a BSL-2 Translational Molecular Research Center Takoma Park, Md. JCRI-ABTS is investigating the translational signaling pathways of Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP) for the treatment of cancer, infectious and viral diseases.

Dr. Canady received his BA degree (German) from Villanova University and his medical degree from Temple University, Philadelphia, Pa. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) at McKeesport, McKeesport, PA. Prior to starting his postgraduate fellowships Dr. Canady was a staff surgeon in general surgery at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Dr. Canady completed his postdoctoral fellowship in Immunology and a clinical fellowship in Organ Transplantation (liver, kidney and pancreas) at Yale University School of Medicine/Yale New Haven Hospital. As part of the Yale program Dr. Canady completed an Advanced Clinical fellowship in the department of General Surgery, Visceral and Organ Transplantation Humboldt University Charite Mitte Campus/Virchow Clinic Berlin German under the supervision of Professor and Chief Peter Neuhaus, M.D. Dr. Canady concentrated on the surgical resection and management of complex benign and malignant tumors of the upper gastrointestinal tract i.e. hepatobiliary, pancreas, cholangiocarcinoma, pancreas, intestinal, distal esophagus, stomach and colon tumors as well as organ transplantation (liver, kidney, pancreas, intestine). Dr. Canady returned as a senior clinical fellow in Multivisceral & Intestinal Transplantation (Adult & Pediatric) at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute and Children Hospital of Pittsburgh @ UPMC.

After Pittsburgh he returned to Humboldt University Charite of Berlin as a visiting surgeon and continued his concentration on the surgical management of complex tumors of gastro- intestinal tract and multiple organ transplantation. Dr. Canady was also a visiting surgeon at Kyoto University, Department of Surgery/Transplantation Kyoto, Japan. He worked with the Chief of Transplantation Koichi Tanaka, M.D. Dr. Tanaka is noted for his pioneering work in living donor liver transplantation. Dr. Canady completed recently a fellowship in Peritoneal Surface Malignancy, HIPEC, Cytoreduction and was a Visiting Professor of Surgery in the Department of General and Surgical Oncology (Chief Aviram Nissan, M.D.) at The Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Tel HaShomer, Israel.

Dr. Canady is a member of various professional societies: Yale Club of Washington, D.C., American Society of Transplant Surgeons, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and alumnus at Yale University School of Medicine/Yale New Haven Hospital, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine/University Medical Center, University of Illinois @Chicago, Temple University and Villanova University.

Priya Chhikara, M.D.

Priya Chhikara, M.D. is a board certified General Surgeon and junior partner at Canady Surgical Group. She is a staff surgeon at the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center in Largo, MD, and at UM Laurel Medical Center in Laurel, MD.

Dr. Chhikara completed her dual BA degrees in biology and psychology at the University at Albany, State University of NY. She received her medical degree at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY and completed her surgical training at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Chhikara is a broadly-trained general surgeon with an interest in laparoscopic surgery, acute care surgery, complex abdominal and intestinal surgery, colon surgery, hernia surgery, breast surgery, skin and soft tissue surgery, and gallbladder surgery. Her research interests include the surgical management of breast cancer, as well as the effects of weight loss surgery.

Dr. Chhikara strives to promote patient education and ensure her patients feel comfortable and understand their treatment options. She is currently accepting new patients and is excited to welcome them to Canady Surgical Group.
